Mixing faith and business

Last year, when I was playing around with the idea of starting this business, there was one question that continued to present itself: How much do I want to incorporate my faith into my business?

On one hand, it’s often recommended to have your business remain neutral. Keep it clean, keep it professional, keep it simple. It’s hard to offend your audience or turn them away if you follow this philosophy.

On the other hand, my faith is the center of my life. It’s who I am; the foundation of everything I believe and do. How could I not talk about the thing that guides my every step in life?

Here at Mesman Media, connection is a core value. Not only does connection breed loyalty, but it breeds community. Whether it's a client or a silent follower, when a person feels connected, they feel seen and validated.

How could I embrace the idea of connection with my audience without being fully transparent about the thing I place my identity in? Even more than that, how could I steward my gifts to bring God glory if I never actually give Him glory?

I would rather miss out on a few clients than fail to point people back to the One who my entire life and business are centered on. I would rather miss out on a few clients than mistakenly give the glory to myself. I would rather miss out on a few clients than go my entire career never speaking about Jesus.

So to answer the question: How much do I want to incorporate my faith into my business? As much as possible. Through kindness. Through connection. Through making others feel seen and heard. Through patience. Through my actions, but also through my words. Nothing I do means anything if it doesn’t give Him glory.

I leave you with this passage from 1 Peter 4:10-11:

“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory forever and ever. Amen.”
